According to various sources today including The West Australian, the surf movie ‘Drift’ has attracted Australian backers including ScreenWest and Screen Australia. As part of its ‘Royalties for Regions’ program, The WA State Government has invested $1 million in the project to ensure that it will be filmed in the South West. Citing the economic boost and exposure for the South West as reasons why his department wanted to invest in the movie, Development Minister Brendon Grylls said:
“With Sam Worthington on board, one of the world’s highest profile actors at the moment, and a storyline that showcases the region’s stunning coastline, the publicity that will be achieved will be immense.”
ScreenWest is also investing an extra $500,000 to the project through its ‘Production Attraction Fund’.
The production company for ‘Drift’ is World-Wide-Minds Films and the producers are Tim Duffy, (formerly of Perth, now based in NYC), Sydney-based Michele Bennett and Sam Worthington’s co-star in the movie Myles Pollard.
‘Drift’ will be the first Australian movie that Sam Worthington has been involved in since Terminator Salvation, Avatar and Clash Of The Titans brought him to the attention of world-wide audiences.
The official synopsis for the movie is:
It’s 1972 and after escaping their brutal past, the Fisher brothers start a new life in a remote Australian coastal town. Now they must battle suspicious locals, killer waves and ruthless bikers as they struggle to kick-start a business from their greatest passion – surfing.
