Sam Worthington wearing Volcom surfer hoodieThe Sydney Morning Herald have reported today that we WILL get to see Sam surfing in the movie Drift, which is due to start principal photography in July in the Margaret River region of WA, though most of the surfing scenes will be shot during April and May to coincide with pro surfing events.

This will give some of the best surfers in the state a chance to appear in the movie as body doubles for Sam Worthington and Myles Pollard. They’ll be riding the really big waves off Margaret River that can be over 15 feet as, naturally, they prefer to play it safe with their actors, though both of them are planning to do a lot of their own stunts as they are both experienced surfers in their own rights.

Talking about Sam in particular, Producer Tim Duffy said:

“His role requires him to be in the water quite a bit,” Duffy said.

“So he will be in a lot of the action water scenes. He has already spent his whole life in the water…he is a West Australian surfer so he is pretty much prepared better than most of the actors.”

The $11 million movie tells the story of two brothers who start a small backyard surfboard business in the early seventies and features action sequences involving huge waves.

Sam Worthington wearing Volcom surfer hoodieAccording to The West Australian, Sam Worthington will be heading home next year to make a surfing drama set in Margaret River.

The producers of the movie ‘Drift’ have reportedly signed Sam to the project which has an $11 million budget, and is expected to begin shooting next autumn to take advantage of the big waves, moodier skies and, if the schedule allows, the Margaret River Pro surfing event.

Sam is well-known to be a lifelong surfer and is excited about returning to WA.

“I’m a WA boy at heart and to go back there and put something back into my home town is something I am really looking forward to,” he said.

“There’s something pure and true about surfing, and there is something pure and true about this script.”

Drift tells the story of how surfing evolved from a pastime to a global industry, spawning household names such as Billabong and Rip Curl and is inspired by real events. Worthington will play a photographer and journalist instrumental in that revolution.

This movie has come together because of the desire of a group of film industry ex-pats anxious to come home and take advantage of the breathtaking locations and untold stories.

Former Cowaramup resident Tim Duffy will produce along with former McLeod’s Daughters star Myles Pollard. Sydney-based Morgan O’Neill and sports specialist Ben Nott will direct.
