Sam Worthington, Myles Pollard & Steve Bastoni - Cast of the movie 'Drift' - pic via perthnow;PerthNow.com.au have run a great piece in which Sam says how generous the locals in the Margaret River area of WA have been in welcoming the actors and crew of the movie ‘Drift’.

“The locals have been really generous with allowing us to film here. I went to drama school with (producer and co-star) Myles Pollard and (director) Morgan O’Neill, so it’s great to be able to film with mates,” he said.

For the movie, Sam’s got some great dreadlocks, classic ’70s jumpers and thongs, the perfect look for the hippie surf photographer he plays in the movie.

Filming wraps up this week and producers hope it will appear at the Toronto Film Festival later this year.

Here’s a snippet for you, but you’ll have to follow the link to The West Australian if you want to read the rest:

The Rockingham-raised actor slipped into Margaret River this week to enjoy the town’s relaxed vibe before starting filming yesterday on 70s surf epic Drift in nearby Nannup.

Locals barely raised an eyebrow as the Avatar star – almost unrecognisable sporting a shaggy beard, sunglasses and thongs – enjoyed a beer at a local tavern on Tuesday and a quiet breakfast at a coffee shop yesterday.

Worthington, 35, said it was “absolutely nice” to be back in WA, which he said could not be compared with Los Angeles.

“One’s ridiculous and filled with lots of cars and traffic and one’s the most beautiful place on earth,” he said.

Worthington said his mates were what he missed most while living away.

He said he jumped at the chance to spend more time with good friend Myles Pollard, who is set to star in Drift. “I’ve known Myles for years and it’s great to work with friends . . . this is really his little baby,” he said.

Worthington plays a surf photographer and documentary maker who represents the “spirit” of surfing.

Movie distributor TF1 International have added an expanded synopsis for the movie ‘Drift’ which gives a little more detail for Sam’s character ‘JB’.

Australia, 1970s. The Fisher brothers, Andy (28) and Jimmy (22), have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a sleepy coastal town with some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous waves. For the next 12 years, the boys perfected their surfing skills, always searching for the perfect ride.

Free-spirited Jimmy is a gifted surfer and innovator but he starts to slip toward a life of crime to help the family out of debt. Andy makes a big decision. Quitting a stable job, he bets on Jimmy’s surf inventions and his own business skills and launches a backyard surf gear business. They rethink board design, craft homemade wetsuits and sell their merchandise out of their van.

Encouraged by their new friends, travelling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker JB (Sam Worthington) and his gorgeous Hawaiian surfer companion, Lani, who stirs the two brothers’ hearts, they start to seek ways to expand.

After they get mixed up with a local drug dealer, it looks like everything they built up, will be ruined…

Set in breathtaking locations and inspired by the true story of Australia’s legendary surfwear moguls, the film chronicles the rise of surf brands and the expansion of the laidback surf attitude as a global lifestyle. A story of passion and corruption, friendship and loyalty, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, Drift tells a tale of courage and the will to survive against all odds.

They also tell us that:

World-Wide-Mind Films has established a collaboration with surf wear company Quiksilver. Through this collaboration a number of exciting opportunities to market the film become available, including:

1. Promotion for the film on Quiksilver clothing, in-store posters and videos, at the several international Quiksilver sporting events, websites and social network promotions.

2. Access to a library of vintage surfing footage and memorabilia to be used within the film and for promotional purposes.

3. A Drift clothing line to be used both for characters within the film and marketed via Quiksilver.

4. Involvement of surf athletes sponsored by Quiksilver to participate in the exciting stunt sequences of the film and some special cameo appearances by champion athletes.

Sam Wearing Volcom Surf-Brand HoodieAccording to various sources today including The West Australian, the surf movie ‘Drift’ has attracted Australian backers including ScreenWest and Screen Australia. As part of its ‘Royalties for Regions’ program, The WA State Government has invested $1 million in the project to ensure that it will be filmed in the South West. Citing the economic boost and exposure for the South West as reasons why his department wanted to invest in the movie, Development Minister Brendon Grylls said:

“With Sam Worthington on board, one of the world’s highest profile actors at the moment, and a storyline that showcases the region’s stunning coastline, the publicity that will be achieved will be immense.”

ScreenWest is also investing an extra $500,000 to the project through its ‘Production Attraction Fund’.

The production company for ‘Drift’ is World-Wide-Minds Films and the producers are Tim Duffy, (formerly of Perth, now based in NYC), Sydney-based Michele Bennett and Sam Worthington’s co-star in the movie Myles Pollard.

‘Drift’ will be the first Australian movie that Sam Worthington has been involved in since Terminator Salvation, Avatar and Clash Of The Titans brought him to the attention of world-wide audiences.

The official synopsis for the movie is:

It’s 1972 and after escaping their brutal past, the Fisher brothers start a new life in a remote Australian coastal town. Now they must battle suspicious locals, killer waves and ruthless bikers as they struggle to kick-start a business from their greatest passion – surfing.
