THR EXCLUSIVE
By Elizabeth Guider and Carl DiOrio

April 15, 2010
It looks as if the Weinsteins have managed to fashion a winning bid in the Miramax auction and will take back operating control of the company they founded in 1979 and sold to Disney for $80 million in 1993.

Running the process internally, the Burbank studio for months has been soliciting offers for the recently shut specialty-film unit and its 611-title library.

Highlights from ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY’s March 29, 2010 issue
(on newsstands nationwide Friday, April 2):

New York – Clash of the Titans was a cheesy 1981 fantasy film that became a cult classic. Harry Hamlin wore a toga. How could you not love it? Now Clash has been reborn as a 3-D spectacle, starring Avatar’s Sam Worthington as a demigod warrior. Entertainment Weekly uncovers the truth behind all the myths.
Even back in 1980’s, the movie was considered by many to be a B-grade hunk of feta. Still, it turned a lot of young moviegoers into Greek freaks – thanks mostly to F/X master Ray Harryhausen’s giant stop-motion scorpions and other trippy animated creatures – and became a cult classic. “The original movie is very dear to my heart,” says Leterrier, the French action auteur behind The Incredible Hulk and Transporter 2 . “It was the first fantastical adventure I ever saw as a child. I absolutely loved it. I remembered the scene with the witches. And Medusa. And the sea monster. But when I watched it again after they called me [with the directing offer], I was like, ‘Oh, wow. It was a better movie in my memory.’ But these sorts of projects come around once every 20 years. So I thought, ‘I’ll try to make my version of the movie – the movie I want to see.’”

WEAVER TO RISE FROM DEAD IN NEXT “AVATAR”
Studio Brief; March 1, 2010
Sam Worthington-Avatar-Co-stars-Zoe Saldana and Sigourney WeaverNot only has James Cameron decided to make a sequel to Avatar, he’s also begun casting it — and, it turns out, one of the persons he wants to include in it is Sigourney Weaver. Appearing on a French TV show, Le Grand Journal, Weaver disclosed that Cameron had spoken to her about reviving her role as Dr. Grace Augustine — reviving it in more ways than one, given the fact that in the original film, the character appears to die after a failed effort by the alien Na’vi people to try to transfer her injured human body into her avatar one. “Ah,” Weaver revealed, she didn’t die but entered the Tree of Souls. “I’m actually in the tree. If you’ll remember the special effect, I go into the tree,” she said during the interview. She insisted that she didn’t want to “promise” anything else about Cameron’s plans but said, “I think there are a few ideas about how to keep the family together.”

Weaver was in Paris to present the prestigious César d’Honneur to Harrison Ford at France’s César Awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscars. At the awards, Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino beat out Avatar as best foreign film. (Other English-language films in the category included last year’s Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire and contender Milk as well as this year’s Golden Globes winner in the foreign-language category, The White Ribbon.) Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet (Un Prophete) won nine awards, including French film of the year and best director.

Sam Worthington tells me there’s no truth to the FLASH GORDON rumors

Hey folks, Harry here… Back last year, when Merrick ran that rumor story about Sam Worthington being in a runoff with Ryan Reynolds for the part of FLASH GORDON. Well, I don’t have Ryan’s email, but I do chat back and forth via email with Sam a bit, so I asked him if there was any truth to a possible FLASH aaaah aaaaaaaaaahhhhh, in his future. Technically I didn’t put it that way. But you get the gist. Here’s what Sam wrote me back today:

happy new year mate
here is no validity to the rumours
sometimes, as you know, studios tend to just scat ideas and they leak out – but its the first i have heard about it mate.
sam

SO – if there is a runoff for the part of FLASH GORDON, Sam isn’t aware of it. Well, I guess we brought it to his attention now. But he was not going out for the part or involved in capturing the role. But as he puts it, this could be a thing where those involved are fishing for reactions.

With Sam playing a cyborg, an Avatar and Perseus back to back to back… Him playing FLASH GORDON would seem a bit much in terms of playing iconic character SciFi and Fantasy Characters – And I have to admit, I really would love to see him in a L.A. CONFIDENTIAL type of movie… and actually – he might be a great candidate for CAPTAIN AMERICA and frankly… FLASH GORDON would be an interesting part, so long as tonally he plays it very different from these other characters.

Hold on tight, Crushers. Award season is ramping up and we don’t want you to miss any of the fierce fashions, tear-soaked acceptance speeches or kooky moments. With Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards behind us, it’s time to turn our gaze toward the Golden Globes, which airs Sunday, January 17. Hosted by Ricky Gervais, the ceremony’s been recruiting some of our favorite actors and actresses to present those gilded orbs.Sam Worthington-Golden Globe Awards
Last year was big for Australian actor Sam Worthington who scored roles in both “Terminator Salvation” and the holiday blockbuster “Avatar.” We drooled over his Vogue pictorial last month and are happy to report we’ll be seeing plenty of the hunk in 2010, not only as Zeus’ son Perseus in “Clash of the Titans,” but as a presenter at next week’s ceremony. Are you as excited as we are to hear that Aussie accent?
Also hitting the stage are “Gossip Girl” hottie Chace Crawford, Gerard Butler, Cameron Diaz and previous winners Jennifer Garner and Kate Winslet. Kate’s buddy and “Titanic” costar Leonardo DiCaprio, along with Robert De Niro, will present the Cecil B. DeMille Award to director Martin Scorsese for his “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.”
Perhaps we’ll be seeing 2010 presenter Christina Aguilera’s name on the 2011 nomination list, as she’s currently filming her acting debut in the film “Burlesque.” I mean, we’ve already heard great things from the set about her performance!
You can view the most recent presenters list at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Web site.

The Golden Globes air January 17th on NBC
